Speaking and writing about secrets from the treatment room — Case studies in times of privacy regulations
The case study is the research method of choice in psychoanalysis. It was the way by which Freud built his theory and his case studies are still read today. Testifying about one's own work through case presentations is a core aspect of psychoanalytic work and education. Both clinical and systematic case studies are also indispensable as a method in the scientific field. In addition to ethical and deontological issues, which have long caused debate, the current legal regulations pose challenges when presenting and writing cases. This paper addresses the questions raised in this context, questions to which unambiguous answers are inevitably lacking. In line with psychoanalytic ethics, they can be tackled only case by case.
