1st May 1951.
Dear Strachey,1
You may have seen from the notices sent round that I am due to give a paper on 30th May on what I am calling “Transition Objects.” Actually I am trying to get some of this written out clearly before Whitsun so that it can be circulated. The full paper would be rather a long one.
I am writing to you because I am wondering whether you would agree to read through what I have roughly made of this paper already and let me come and discuss it with you. I am particularly keen to pick up the ordinary psychoanalytic theory in the theoretical section of the paper enough to make what I think is my own contribution acceptable.
You will be relieved to hear that I have done quite a bit of psychoanalytic reading, thanks to having been ill twice; however, it is still true to say that if I were to take a year off and do nothing but read, I would be in a better position for writing papers.
I will be ringing you up about this, but to make a rough suggestion, I would very much like to be able to see you, perhaps Tuesday 8th May any time between 7 P.M. and midnight; if you prefer a morning time, I could probably manage the morning of 8th between 11 and 2. I know that you will tell me if you would rather not burden yourself with this.
Yours very sincerely,
D. W. Winnicott.
