Dear Glover,
Your letter1 does not need an answer, but I feel like writing nevertheless as we are colleagues and both human beings.
The point you make gets to the centre of our scientific differences,
I think, because you genuinely hold the view that D.W.W.'s ideas (or M.K.'s) are not derived from objective perception of children's ideas, whereas I genuinely believe that they are. At this point I think we can comfortably leave the solution to future observers.
I am sure that your scepticism has a valuable effect, making me a more careful observer, and I expect that my observations have some effect or other on you although I cannot for the moment say exactly what. In any case the review was signed so that everyone is free to feel as you felt when reading the review, that I was talking about “edging away from D.W.W.'s ideas of the child's ideas of the psyche-soma.”
With good wishes,
Yours,
D. W. Winnicott.
