Dear Dr. Bonnard:
I wanted to let you know last night that I got on very well with your paper,1 but at the end you were talking to Gillespie and I had a date with Miss Freud about something.
If there had been a gap I would like to have joined in with congratulations on the analysis itself which is obviously going very well and which you are not hurrying and which you are letting take its own course. This I believe to be the only sensible meaning to the word analysis. I am not by this intending to suggest that one cannot hold up the course of analysis by blind spots in oneself or by ignorance, but I have the impression from your paper that anything that turns up in this case you are able to welcome and to deal with.
If we ever happen to be sitting next to each other over a coffee (or beer!) I would like to discuss with you yet another aspect of the transference situation which I believe you wanted brought out as it is very clearly in your material. This has to do with the way in which you, as one might say, were like a wireless set, only better because human. You implied all this, I think, and in this way you as analyst joined up with the fetish objects and the fetish practices which are part of the relationship to objects and yet at the same time in between the actual relationship between whole human beings.
For me this was the most interesting part of the paper although there were many other aspects of your presentation which interested me intensely. I felt I was able to get the idea of what you were like as an analyst from your paper, which is always important when one is thinking of a paper read with the object of the election to membership.
I very much admired the way in which you doggedly went on until the hour was late. This was very sensible of you. I should personally have packed up and regretted it afterwards.
About the telepathy—I have very good evid
