18th March 1954.
Dear Miss Freud,
It was good of you to write and I am sure we all missed you at the meeting. My paper produced a really interesting discussion I believe. My aim will be now to try to correlate my ideas with those of Kris and Hartmann1 as I feel what they have recently written that we are all trying to express the same things, only I have an irritating way of saying things in my own language instead of learning how to use the terms of psycho-analytic metapsychology.
I am trying to find out why it is that I am so deeply suspicious of these terms. Is it because they can give the appearance of a common understanding when such understanding does not exist? Or is it because of something in myself? It can, of course, be both.
Good wishes,
Yours sincerely,
D. W. Winnicott.
