21st April 1955.
Dear Rycroft,
I hope your paper went well last night. I was very grieved to be unable to make it but I have had a rotten cold with sinuses and when I finished work I just found I could not do any more and I went to sleep. I would rather have missed almost any paper than yours, which was very interesting and which deals with a subject which interests me very much, as you know, and which I find difficult to grasp in the sort of way that you seem to be able to do. It is quite one thing to come at a problem through clinical work and to formulate something in one's own language, and another thing to take ideas and interrelate them, thus contributing to the building of theory.
I shall be hearing how the evening went, but I thought I would like you to know why I was not there. Perhaps Marion Milner told you that I was not really well, as she knew about this Wednesday middle day.
Yours,
D. W. Winnicott.
