Dear Dr. Lacan,
I am very glad to have the fifth volume of La Psychanalyse and I write to thank you for your publication of a translation of my paper on Transitional Objects. It seems to me that someone has taken immense trouble over the details of translation and this was probably yourself. In any case I owe to you the fact that this article is now available in the French language.
I have been working at your paper on the Theory of Symbolism in memory of Ernest Jones, but I have not yet properly assimilated its meaning or assessed its significance.
Incidentally, my name ends in a double ‘t’ (Winnicott) but that sort of thing doesn't worry me.
I have not forgotten that you asked if you could give a paper over here and no doubt you must feel that I have been very lazy about this. In fact you will know what I mean when I say that it was first necessary for the Society officially to ask a Member of the Société Psychoanalytique de Paris. Now I believe this has been arranged, that someone will come and lecture to us, and then we shall be free to invite you. I am sorry it has to be worked out this way, but I am also sorry about the split in French psychoanalysis
