30th September 1965.
Dear Dr. Storr:
I was glad to meet you and also I was interested in what you were saying. Isn't the clue (in part) that in the west, which is a depressive society, paranoids hide their delusions, or else hide them in systems, and if they can't, well then they are “mad.” By contrast, in Nigeria Society, “based on projection,” the delusions arising out of projection simply narrow down the circle of the man (or woman)'s friends to those who have similar delusions. No doubt the very deluded get fairly near to being isolated. But never quite, perhaps.
Isn't it awful to think that the west has introduced barbaric ECT to a community that was getting on quite well with healers, who are psychologically minded in a sophisticated way, even if rather magical and unscientific.
Good wishes, Yours,
