24th October 1967.
Dear Dr. Dahlberg,
In reply to your letter of 5th October, I have lectured a great deal on the subject of physical contact between patient and therapist. If one writes these things down one gets very easily misunderstood, and I am afraid that there is no way of referring you to
what I have written on this subject except to ask the reader to get a general inference from going through my writings, especially “Collected Papers: Through Paediatrics to Psycho-Analysis” (Tavistock Publications, London, 1958 and Basic Books, N.Y., 1958) and “The Maturational Processes and the Facilitating Environment” (Hogarth Press, London, 1965 and Clarke, Irwin, Toronto, 1965).
There has been a recent special occasion for discussing this over here because of the Warrendale film1 which comes from Canada. I organized a very well-attended discussion around this film and I would like you to know that you are right in thinking that I have made a great deal of reference to this point that you are examining even if I have not written about it. I wish you well in your researches.
Yours sincerely,
D. W. Winnicott, F.R.C.P.
