Dear Professor,
Since I am not able to attend the meetings of the Vienna Freud Society, I would at least like to belong as a corresponding member, and I would like to initiate myself, as the strict statutes require,1 with the enclosed short paper.2 It is actually intended not only for this select circle but also for the
medical public at large, and therefore contains much that would be of interest only to the latter. But such popularizing works are probably not yet superfluous. I beg your forgiveness for the lack of style.
In order to save you time I have not answered your last friendly letter, in which you were so kind as to renew in writing our conversation in Salzburg about our sojourn together this summer. I am using this opportunity to thank you kindly for the information.—Rarely have I so looked forward to the vacation as this year. I have only four weeks at my disposal.—I want to distribute them in such a way that I can spend fourteen days in Berchtesgaden and the other fourteen on the trip with you. Accordingly, I will arrive in Berchtesgaden on August 15. If you consider it necessary, I will accept your kind offer regarding lodging and inform you in a timely fashion of the exact time of my arrival.
I must also thank you for your kindness in recommending me to Dr. Bedö (a lawyer in Budapest). He spoke with me already. The treatment with his wife has not yet begun, however.
Your most obedient
Dr. Ferenczi
There were no statutes in the organizational sense in the Wednesday Society. New members were elected, and it was customary for them to introduce themselves with a lecture. Stricter criteria for membership—such as election by secret ballot with a two-thirds majority—were discussed on February 5 and 12, 1908, and finally rejected (Minutes I, 298-302, 315f).
