Dear Professor,
I don't want to let the day go by without answering your very kind letter.
You ask me if I am laughing at you because of your inconsistency.— Nothing could be further from the truth. On the contrary: my observation that you so often waste your precious time on my literary attempts causes me to reproach myself, and I often think of Lichtenberg's1 words: “It is always better for an office to be lesser than its holder's capabilities.”—Very often I am overcome by doubt whether in the long run I will be able to justify the trust that you have in my activities.
