Dear Professor,
Your letter of today has saddened me greatly, although I get the sense from the tone of your communication about your daughter's illness that there is no question of grave danger. When you are so worried, and on top of that still so busy, you really don't need to make the effort to answer my letters, although I will permit myself from time to time to send you mine.
Today I was at the local central ticket agency, where they could give out information only about Cunard Line and North German Lloyd because the schedules of the other steamship companies (Hamburg America Line, etc.) have supposedly not yet been set. (But that could also be a dodge; the agency only represents Cunard and Lloyd.)
The only ship of the Cunard with which we could travel is the Carpathia, which leaves from Fiume on August 7 and lands in New York on August 24. (All other ships come too early or too late.) The passage costs 18 £ (432 crowns) and up, depending on location of cabin. So, very cheap— but for our purposes somewhat too early, and the passage (seventeen days!) too long. The stops are Palermo, Naples, Gibraltar.
We might further consider the Cunard liner Campania, which leaves Liverpool on August 21 and arrives in New York before September i (the ship already heads back on September i). (Price of the trip 20 £ 10 s = ca. 500 crowns.) Better cabins probably somewhat more.
Of the Lloyd ships we could take the Kronprinz Wilhelm, which departs Bremen on August 24 and reaches New York in seven days. Price of a first class cabin: 480-1,800 marks,
I still want to ask an acquaintance who lives in Hamburg for information.
Cordially,
Dr. Ferenczi
