Vienna, April 27, 1909
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear colleague,
I am so busy that I am asking you to take something from me, namely, the responsibility for booking passage to America. The matter is as follows: the Austro-Americana has a ship leaving on August 21, the Laura, which
takes at least fourteen days and thus does not land before September 4, and possibly takes a day longer, when we are supposed to be in Worcester on the 6th. Many advise against traveling on such a tight schedule. I wrote to Brill and Stanley Hall in order to get direct advice, expect a reply still in April, and will then decide; in any case have tickets on April 30 (with your help).
The Austro has two advantages: the Mediterranean trip and the low price for good cabins, 650 crowns, whereas on the Hamburg and the NG Lloyd the price could be double that. Perhaps you could inquire if the dates and prices of the Cunard Line from Fiume offer the same advantages, and then put together an overview of the travel possibilities and price differentials.1 We must decide very soon, since from experience the good spots are soon taken. A great deal depends on the cabin, so we don't want to economize there. I am so busy that I would be happy if you could take the matter out of my hands. As soon as I get word from America I will ask you to make the reservations, perhaps by telegram. Here I can get them more easily only with Austro, where my brother has connections, in case you decide not to do it.
My daughter has fallen ill again (from the same remnant of the operation), which doesn't exactly make me more animated and should excuse my effort to impose on you for this.
Cordially,
Your Freud
