Dear Professor,
I hope that no obstacles have come in the way of your vacation plans, and that in the colossal efforts of a psychoanalytic year (about which I also now have a vague idea) you have at last been able to get some rest in the midst of your beloved woods and in the circle of your dear throng of children! Please allow yourself to plunge into your work. [That was a slip of the pen; I intended to write not to plunge, and immediately add “although this request struggles against an inner wish to have more and more of you.]1
I am not so alone as you surmise. A favorable coincidence has made it possible for me to be in pleasant company for the summer months as well.2 Still, it was very enticing to me when you spoke of the possibility of my spending a few days in the Tyrolian mountains with you.—Unfortunately, for the time being it won't work!
I have six weeks of leave (from August 16 to October I). Could you tell me something about the return trip (date of arrival in Europe, port city)? I calculate 1,200 marks = 1,500 crowns for the trip, 60 crowns per day for the remaining thirty days = 1,800 crowns; that makes a total of 3,300 crowns.—the remainder for unforeseen expenses. Do you think that's enough?
No talk of preparations on my part! An hour of English conversation per day is all that reminds me of America.—Do you have plans for the stay in America, and if so, which places should we vi
