Vienna, February 25, 1910
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
I am returning Putnam's letter, which is enclosed. I don't know why he makes such great demands on Ψ α influencing, especially after three months' work. Has he been spoiled by the successes of earlier treatments?
Jung is writing more freely again, and the Congress is gradually taking
shape. So far he has had twenty-two applications; ten to fifteen will be added from Vienna. I don't think we will be numerous, and we don't need to be. But we should do good organizational work. About lectures: Abraham on fetishism, Marcinowski on sejunctive processes in the genesis of neuroses (which emphasizes its special position already in the title), Adler on Ψ hermaphroditism (on Wednesday he gave us the lecture,1 which is full of anaragmmmatic misunderstandings and is packed with will-ó-the-wisps; the genesis of neuroses is supposedly as follows: the child suffers from its inferiority, which it takes to be feminine; from that there develops an uncertainty about its gender role, which is the original basis for all later doubt; it attempts a masculine defense, and when that fails, neurosis results—a bad speculation!). I want to ask Stekel to give a lecture on initiating research in collecting symbols and typical dreams. He should then become head of the committee elected to do that, put to good use and at the same time held in check by the others. In addition to that, there will be our three lectures (Jung, you, I). There will probably be others.2
I think that we can go to the Congress together, that you will pick me up, and the like. It's still up in the air whether Jung's contribution will take place a day before or a day after; it depends on his call-up for military service, which still hasn't been firmed up.
Today Jones had two very good letters come in. Today the first introduction by letter from Häberlin.3 So much for external news.
Your book on Ibsen should come into being one day. The student got his copy of Everyday Life.
