Vienna, April 12, 1910
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Professor Modena from Ancona1 just left, a pleasant Judeo-Italian who has translated half of the Theory of Sexuality and is still looking for a publisher for it. We will perhaps be able to visit him on the trip to Sicily.
Your discussion in the last letter got me busy in certain directions. I see much that can't be changed and that I have always regretted. But the next thing that can happen is obvious: that you advertise a course in ΨA for physicians and others. That seems to be the way to make yourself the center of a circle and to constitute the Budapest group soon. As far as the rest is concerned, accept it with Ψα resignation and write to me as often and as much as you want. I think I understand all that.
The Viennese here were very friendly in the reaction after Nuremberg and definitely wanted to found the Republic with the Grand Duke at the top. I at least had to keep leading the discussion in scientific sessions, but I will be able to withdraw gradually. A committee—Adler, Stekel, Steiner, Federn, Hitschmann,2 Sadger—is occupied with the necessary new arrangements. I don't believe that my resignation will turn out to be only a formal change. Oversight may be necessary, then as now, but I can't provide it, and the matter will probably not continue quite in the way we mean it to, since the others are not so united among themselves as the two of us. The newest Dioscuri, Adler-Stekel, are considering publishing a Ψα Zentralblatt [Central Organ], which is supposed to perform search-and-destroy missions alongside the heavy artillery of the Jahrbuch.3 I think that will be a good place for some of the notes that you sent me for review.
