Dear Professor,
I must extend the validity of your statement, according to which physicians are in Ψα treatment, to the adherents of your doctrines as well. The difference is only that we are treated not with “nonobservance” but rather according to all the rules of the art. I scarcely believe that the treatment of your patients ever caused you as many headaches as ours. Your newest principle (which, by the way, is becoming more and more clear to me)—that technique has to direct itself according to the uniqueness of each case—is becoming completely valid with us. The personal sensitivities, childish ideas of jealousy and grandeur, personal destinies: all this becomes a burden to you, so that you also have to bear the concerns of all your pupils in addition to your own. I am aware of the fact that only the capacity for total self-analysis, the bringing out of one's inner conflicts without outside aid, signifies the final cure of a person, and I am firmly resolved to make use of your offer to write to you as much and as often as I want only in the sense that I will communicate to you the results of previous self-analysis; you will probably also find something in this that doesn't appear to be perfectly clear to you. In this way I hope to be able to spare you a lot of care and work. You certainly have enough of both. If it were in my power, I would recommend similar procedures to all our colleagues. In addition to consideration for you, there also comes into play the egoistic wish on my part to spare you superfluous matters so that you can work with fewer distractions.
The experiences in Nuremberg have certainly not encouraged me very much, to the extent that I had dared to hope that in the not too distant future psychoanalysts would get serious about the energy expended against themselves.
I will gladly send smaller pieces for the Zentralblatt; we are up to our ears in those things. I just revised my little notebook and will
