IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
I hadn't intended to write to you until the Zentralblatt was out, but I have had a tiring day today and am disposed only to write letters. So you are the victim.
So, you are still asserting your point of view, and, I concede, ardently and with good arguments. But there is nothing obligatory in that. Perhaps you are imagining completely different secrets than [those] I have reserved for myself, or you think there is a special suffering connected with that, whereas I feel myself to be a match for anything and approve of the overcoming of my homosexuality, with the result being greater independence.
It occurs to me that a paralyzing influence emanated from you to the extent that you were always prepared to admire me. Since I am very jealous of my self-criticism, especially in scientific matters, I naturally gave no cause for admiration. Self-criticism is not a pleasant gift, but it is, next to my courage, the best thing in me, and it has caused me to be extremely selective in publishing my works. I am now completely booked up, from eight to eight and a half hours, and I already find the activity somewhat monotonous. But there are always small harvests. I have nothing as multifaceted to compare with the report of your activities. At the moment correspondence is costing me much time. Bleuler has replied to me with a letter eight pages long, and I responded with one ten pages long.1 His arguments are remarkably dim. If he gives me possibilities for sewing up the rift, perhaps I will go to Zurich over Christmas.
Jones's Hamlet2 is before me in German translation. I will have it published as the tenth volume of the Schriften, as Deuticke has suggested.
If you want to give your colleague a hefty rebuff, I certainly have no objection to it. You won't require censorship. I just don't want the energy of my Viennese dir
