Dear friend,
I am now so intensively involved with all kinds of work (not to mention an extensive correspondence with Bleuler) that it has taken days for me to find the letter you wanted. So here it is. Meanwhile, the Zentralblatt has come out; although not yet technically complete, it is still a significant moment in the development of the cause. Yesterday I spoke in the Society about the “two principles of Ψ functioning.”1 Unsatisfying. Even I didn't like it anymore at the end. It's getting more and more difficult to get along with these people. A mixture of shy admiration and stupid contradiction quand même, not in the same persons. Adler is becoming disagreeable with his new theories, the inappropriateness of which I am becoming more convinced of every day. I should have begun with the purely factual, with the analysis of Schreber, which has flourished considerably.
For the second volume of the Zentralblatt Jung has delivered the facade, and I a little didactic paper, “‘Wild’ ΨA.”2 We already have an excess of material and a shortage of space, but one must have an inventory, and you shouldn't curtail any of your plans.
Grandmother died today in Hamburg,3 and my wife left for the funeral. The poor woman had to hold out until the last gasp. Ernst, who has become rheumatic since we were at the sea and looks bad, will be sent to Merano for a few weeks after Mama's return. I always consider editions like that [2nd ed. Sammlung]4 productive. My memories of Rome have recently been awakened by the almost nightly visits of my friend Loewy,5 who talked about his association with the royal couple6 and found the acquisitions from the “national gift”7 very nice. The little Mercury is recognized by all parties, but no one wants to take responsibility for the Tanagra figure.
Strange that I am writing to you about this right at this hectic time; like the woman who rescues the bird cage during the fire.
