[Budapest,] March 9, 1911
Dear Professor,
Nothing significant has been happening here in the last few weeks; that is why I have been silent for so long.
It must have been very stormy in Vienna in the meantime, as I gather from the latest minutes of the “Society.” I am uncommonly pleased that you seem to have observed that ΨA.—both in Vienna and “internationally”—will still require leadership from you, lest it become the victim of neurotic or infantile tendencies. At the same time I observe with satisfaction that you can be active without interruption, well in both body and mind.—
As for polemicizing against opponents, I am entirely of your opinion. This kind of polemic is also boring and painful to me. And yet I also want to force myself to do it in the future.
The sad thing is only that I don't have any doctors as collaborators. The young medical students are immature, and the talented artists and lawyers can't acquire any real analytic practice. [In the meantime, analysis is being practiced clandestinely at all the clinics; at Moravcsik's,1 the “Veraguth“ian (sic!) psychogalvanic reaction2 is even being tested, and Jung's results are being recognized.]3
I am very much looking forward to seeing Putnam again. It is astonishing what that old man was capable of accomplishing. Your plan, that we meet in Switzerland before Lugano, is very agreeable to me. That would be a kind of “pre-Congress” of psychoanalysts of strict observance.
I would like to come to Vienna once again, especially in order to inform myself about the latest events in the Society. But I have to go to my sister's in Nyiregyháza on Saturday regarding family matters.4 On Monday I will be back here, where an uninterrupted schedule awaits me. I am conducting seven analyses daily, among them one at 20 crowns, two to three at 15 crowns, one at 6 crowns (!), one at 8 crowns; one on credit, and the other at 10 crowns. Despite these discounts I am able to save something (especially with the aid of other income). The
