Karlsbad, July 20, 1911
Dear friend,
The tragic letter that you wished to read is lying in my drawer in Vienna and can't be handed over to you until October.
The first thing I am experiencing here—as in a Ψα cure—is the emergence of all my bodily ailments and along with them a deep discord with interesting symptoms that give me something to think about but don't reveal any solution. Only my heart stays well behaved. At times I was able to compete with the late Lazarus.1 I again had a thought that has to do with the instinctual origin [Triebherkunft] of religion, and I will perhaps work it out.2
I was very pleased to see your articles3 finally in print. Now that I am no longer powerless, you should take your proper place in the Zentralblatt. During the next year Adler will have to be held down with cold ruthlessness. It will be be good for all concerned.
The lack of space on the Ritten has caused my people there to make a small move. So you will visit me in the Hotel Klobenstein, not in the Hoferhaus. You will receive more specific information at the proper time.
I greet you and Frau Gisela cordially and wish you much practical success in the new enterprise with Fräulein Elma, but, of course, I fear that it will go well up to a certain point and then not at all. While you're at it, don't sacrifice too many of your secrets out of an excess of kindness.
Cordially,
Freud
