IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
I am using another late hour on Sunday evening to write to you. Not to reply to you, for the vacillating situation that you are reporting on will not tolerate any interference that is not urgent advice, and I can't make up my mind about that despite a charming letter from Frau G.,1 to which she desires no response. It is certainly not a lack of interest nor fear of responsibility but rather regard for the rights of another and concern about connecting the fate of our friendship with something else, something indefinable.
The time since our separation has passed for me in hard work accompanied by the impossibility of concentrating, so I don't have anything clever to relate to you. I also have little from the outside except for a newspaper clipping which would certainly be of most interest to you because of the fact that I myself have no knowledge whatsoever of the party in question, who knows me so well.2 (Please return it.)
I didn't write to Jung again until today. There is better news from Pfister; he seems to be holding his own.3 The photograph that he has enclosed shows the charming face of a girl, access to whom has of course been closed to him for the time being, because he has promised to postpone the divorce by a half year. Bleuler is supposed (according to a report from Binswanger) to have been recommended for Breslau,4 which naturally could be of the greatest interest for the future of ΨA, but the matter is still not firm. You know that Bonhoeffer5 from Breslau is going to Berlin as Ziehen's6 successor. On the whole, I don't have a favorable impression of the external politics of ΨA.
My paper in Imago has already been reprinted twice, in “Pan” and in the Neues Wiener Journal.7 It is the most lifeless thing I have ever written and can only be excused by my being a beginner and by the article on taboo that follows it. Imago seems to be finding a favorable reception from the public.
I greet you cordially and await further
