Dear Professor,
I have been advised by Rank about all details of the events in the local group, and I am also accustomed to telling him about my (certainly mostly posthumous and superfluous) remarks about the journal, so that I can for the most part spare you these things.—In general, I also want to tell you now that I am deeply troubled by the impediment to my trip to Vienna. Precisely in these stormy days, when we have to defend ourselves against open attacks and surreptitious hostilities from all sides, a personal talk with the defender would be indispensable. In addition, for me personally a meeting with you always means encouragement for work, clarification of ripening and unripened thoughts, new insights, and fresh courage.—Instead of this I now have to spend Christmas in my room and torment my poor Konrad with hot compresses.
I intend to be patient with myself for about another week. If nothing changes in the meantime, I will go to Vienna and consult Dr. Zuckerkandl.2 Also, in the—unfortunately not very likely—event that the matter takes a turn for the better in the meantime, I will come to Vienna around New Year's Eve, if I know you will be home then.
