Internationale Zeitschrift Für Ärztliche Psychoanalyse
Vienna, November 27, 1913
Dear friend,
I ask you again not to be so sure in the matter of Prof. Alexander Roth; just don't build anything on him. We all have the worst impression of him and don't understand how you can be satisfied with his information. The fact that he can't read and still undertakes such experiments makes him such an idiot that one wouldn't think him capable of any other craftiness. I know that this one case doesn't mean anything, but it is precisely for that reason that this one should be mercilessly eradicated. Just imagine, if it came to a public discussion about the man, who is now referring in Vienna to his successes in the ΨA Society, we would have to leave you in the lurch. I think you ought rather to have it cost you something to get back your testimonial, which was given too incautiously.
Your failure [to attain the docentship] will have the consequence of my being able to congratulate you one half to a year from now. You will naturally not let yourself be deterred.
Otherwise, nothing new here; a strangely quiet time, in every respect.
Kind regards,
Freud
