Vienna, January 3, 1914
IX., Berggasse 19
D/Dear1 friend,
The D/[Dear] ought to show you that I just wrote to Jones. I didn't know anything about his suggestion that you should write an article about symbolism for the Jahrbuch.2 It occurs to me that you, alone among the great ones, were not represented by an original contribution. The only excuse for such an omission would be the consideration that we shouldn't allow ourselves to be bled dry for the one organ and that the Zeitschrift needs still greater care. But in spite of this, it would make more of an impression if you could appear there as well, with whatever you want, of course. Symbolism has perhaps not gotten properly ripe yet.
I finished Moses,3 but today I still don't know why you protested so vehemently against my anonymity.4 The next thing, or things, as the case may be, will be Narcissism and the more subjective history of the ψα Movement,5 both for the Jahrbuch. I am very well and am working with ease on the usual things.
Let us hope the operation on your nose has done you some good. From today on I am going to work more energetically on Loe.
With a hearty toast to the new year,
Yours,
Freud
Freud evidently began writing the salutation in English and then crossed out the first letter [Trans.].
