Dear friend,
Yesterday I stopped at p. 54 of the new case history1 and can't occupy my arid (from a cold) head with anything better than writing letters.
I take it from your letter how lively your infantile consciousness of guilt
still is! The sudden interruption of the treatment at a time when it was most interesting and productive was very stupid. But it couldn't be helped. I will now give you the prognosis that the self-analysis will very soon fail, and that's all right, because self-analysis and that done by another can't complement each other. What we can do for you here in order that you don't go to the dogs in the service can obviously be only to force you to Ψα interests. I have had Rank send you a few new publications which you would kindly evaluate as an editor for the Zeitschrift, which are, incidentally, interesting in their own right. Binswanger merits particular interest.2 Pfister has suddenly found the ability to see Adler in the light that I have projected.3 He actually does nothing other than beat some of my remarks to death. His special skill is to distill such great praise out of such objections. One-sidedeness, speculative inflexibility, and absurdity seem to be great contributions on which to base science. You will be very amused. Besides that, you have the Kollarits.4 The library naturally requests that they be returned.
The galleys of the new volume of the Zeitschrift also came yesterday. I was very glad to see how meaningful and rich in content your smaller contributions are as well.5
An Italian, Levi Bianchini, Associate Professor in Naples and director of the “Manicomio,” wants to publish an international psychiatric library and begin with a translation of my “Five Lectures.”6 He also offers an exchange of the journals. Accepted.
