[Karlsbad]
Rudolfshof, July 21, 1915
Dear friend,
You will marvel at the fact that I am now bombarding you this way with letters. But that's the way it is.
I know that you are not without a secret inclination toward occult matters. You recall that during the night of the 8th/9th1 I had a clear death dream about Martin after having read Putnam's book.2 At that time, on July 4th, we had had news from him. Today, a card came dated July 7. So, the prophecy has already failed. So, we are certainly not dealing with such crude things. But the news from today reports that his right arm was grazed by a Russian bullet and is now already healing. Since he himself is writing, it really can't have been something worse. He also describes himself as very well. He doesn't indicate a date. I will still try to find it out from him. From the outset we should abandon the correlation in time of day. I acknowledge that one can be far more sensitive at night. If he says anything else, I will let you know.
Kind regards,
Freud
After this date, in purple ink, there is a question mark enclosed in parentheses, which is evidently in someone else's handwriting, perhaps Ferenczi's. The question mark partially conceals another number in Freud's manuscript, presumably a seven.
See letter 550 and n. 4.
