Rudolfshof
Dear friend,
Thanks for your last nice missive.1 I remembered very well your idea of the abbreviated repetition of every Ψ act and don't believe that I have underrated it. On the contrary, I liked it right away; I only kept my distance
from it because it was yours. It also seemed to me at the time to be incapable of completion. In its present form and application I don't hesitate to acknowledge it as a legitimate complement and necessary consequence of my views on the Ψ. I maintain that one should not make theories—they must fall into one's house as uninvited guests while one is occupied with the investigation of details; and now it has reached that point with this theory. But you should work it out yourself when you get the chance; I won't take it up, even though I accept it.2
Your objection against projection in anxiety hysteria probably rests on insufficient knowledge of my analyses of anxiety, which take off from the fact that instinctual cathexis is replaced by realistic anxiety, so that the ego is so afraid of itself, as if the danger did not come from within but from the outside. That is real projection. In other remarks there is also much that is to the point and stimulating, and for that reason I would like to keep your manuscript with me a little longer. You will find the answer to your criticism of the phylogenetic series in the “draft” that I sent you.
You are now really the only one who still works beside me. The others are all militarily paralyzed; I hardly hear anything from Vienna. In two weeks a letter from Rank, no proofreading, no inquiry. I have even turned my attention to the cs., which requires major revision; nothing accomplished yet. Perhaps Lublin, Ivangorod, and Warsaw will help things along.3
According to news which arrived yesterday, Ernst is going to Galicia today to the Dniester [River]. Martin writes that he was offered two weeks' leave. He has been out since January 20.
I greet you cordially and wish you
