Vienna, June 1, 1916
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Since you want it that way—and if your fate permits, I will thus reserve for you two hours a day from the middle of June on. I also hope to see much of you otherwise, and you should at least have one meal with us daily. Technique at least will require that nothing personal will be discussed outside the sessions.
Regarding the first of your two shocking cases, I would like to note that cocaine intoxication in and of itself, and therefore abstinence likewise, leads to a paranoid illness, which I unfortunately witnessed myself in one of the first cases.1 The rapid recovery after proffering cocaine speaks very much in favor of this conception and of removing the burden of analysis. It is certainly of little use in treating intoxications, since every impulse to resistance is discharged into the relapse.
