Salzburg, August 2, 1916
Hotel Bristol
Dear friend,
Your intention to dedicate two more weeks of leave to the analysis has my full approval. The when and where then depends on the extremely shaky circumstances of this summer. Possibly the two of us are going to Gastein at the end of August until the middle of September after all; the analytical hour wouldn't fit there; my wife would always be alone. She would be adaptable to any other arrangement. From mid-September on we should be in Vienna again, in any event.
Salzburg is very beautiful, of course one can't walk in the heat; it's that way in the whole Salzkammergut, different only at high altitude.
I have already written three lectures, which weren't getting at all easy for me. I don't allow Heller two days' peace anymore now. He assures me the Zeitschrift can be expected any day now.
I will very gladly accept Honti's drawing and will find a public place of honor for it. If I can't come to Budapest, then you bring it along.
We are expecting Ernst, who is supposed to have leave from August 4 on and is now already in Bolzano.1 Otherwise, things are fairly lively. One has to withdraw from the disgusting tension in the world outside with all the means at one's disposal; it is unbearable.
Kind regards,
Freud
On August 7 Ernst returned as a newly minted lieutenant on leave to Salzburg, from where he continued on to Aussee in the Salzkammergut with Anna on August 14 (calendar entries by Freud, Library of Congress).
