Vienna, September 17, 1917
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
For the first time a letter from you has affected me in an uncanny manner. I am supposed to reserve a room in Budapest; you still owe me 300 crowns … Even your writing seemed changed to me. In my gloom, which now comes over me occasionally, I said to myself with resignation: So he [has] gone crazy [meschugge geworden], too.
Suddenly, a saving thought came to me, which I will stay with. The letter was intended for Rank and got mixed up. I return it herewith, but I request compensation, since I haven't heard anything yet from you this month.
Kind regards,
Freud
