Vienna, January 21, 1920
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend, Yesterday, Tuesday, January 20, 5:30 P.M., our good friend Toni died.1 I last saw him on Saturday; he was a painful sight. Lajos played the angel of death with him; the postmortem examination showed how much good was done to him with that. The immediate cause of death was a sepsis proceeding from the kidneys; the last symptoms were uremic,2 couldn't be properly interpreted.
You know what we have lost in him. Now we have to protect his legacy, Vera3 and the foundation.
Emil,4 who looks after everything that was dear to Toni's heart, is now making a much softer impression than ever before. I think our interests are well preserved with him; he will follow through with what has to be achieved.
Incidentally, our Verlag is not yet in danger; it can last the year, and help could come by year's end. Our flawless unity and absolute community of interests will guarantee its sure continuation.
I didn't quite understand why you are so anxious in the matter of the securities. They lie untouched and will remain so until everything has been clarified. Only it is not in our interest voluntarily to turn down a big opportunity for profit (from the exchange according to the situation then). I
