Vienna, November 23, 1922
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Your letter which arrived today crosses my intention to write to you and facilitates carrying it out. I think just as you do and grant that you are right on all points. The fact that Rank [is thinking of] changes in the Committee and the Zeitschrift was certainly new to me; he hasn't told me about it, and he probably gave these wishes up again. It should not be surprising if,
under the accumulated attacks, he occasionally and temporarily succumbs to bitterness.
I really wanted to ask you to raise your warning and mediating voice in the next Rundbrief, and was also glad to read that you have made this decision spontaneously. Yesterday there was a long meeting with Rank, and he was also in agreement with the idea of my appearing independently in the next Rundbrief and trying to exercise my influence.1 On the whole, I'm not taking it hard. In Abraham, who is fundamentally gracious and correct, there is operating only the jealousy which has been accumulated by Eitingon and which is exploding in Rank. Jones is more serious; here there are real defects in character and behavior with which one can't confront him quite honestly and which he must conceal by means of some arrangement or other. (To that extent, Adler is right).2
Perhaps it would be good for me to exclude myself from the next Committee meeting (1923) and give you an opportunity to adjust yourselves directly to one another.
Aside from these dark clouds, there are also all kinds of other difficulties. The crisis of the Verlag is quite serious; a piece of it is the absolute lack of money. But we won't let it get stuck, but rather, for the time being, help with our own money. The problem of the Press has suddenly been made clear by the events, and will have to be resolved shortly. Rickman3 is expected tomorrow; Jones intends to come for Christmas; I hope, one more motive, to drive you to Vienna around the same time. Vienna is getting arid, nothing can be had from
