Vienna, October 12, 1924
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
I am passing on to you the depressing news that Frau Kraus, who wanted to build the outpatient clinic, has declared in writing that, in view of the generally bad material situation, she is giving up her intention. The assurance that it has only been postponed naturally has no value. With that my last hope that something respectable would become of ΨA in Vienna goes down the drain. I had placed all hopes on your moving here.
No sign of life from Rank, which also has its meaning. I have also [talked about it] with Jekels,1 in addition to Federn and [Helene] Deutsch. The state of affairs is clear to each, so I don't need to conceal anything.
I get angry when I think about the fact that you had got so deeply involved with him. People naturally often put your names together, and I then explain that you don't know any more about his patent secrets than I do.2
Yesterday I received a friendly telegram about the meeting in Würzburg.
A little note about the “mystic writing-pad”3 as an illustration of my ideas about consciousness is already being edited and is supposed to be published in number I of the next volume.
I greet you and Frau G. cordially.
Yours,
Freud
