Dear Professor,
It is virtually becoming necessary to decree a special kind of legitimate indiscretion. Dr. Inman shared with me, evidently under the protection of analytic confidentiality, some things about the anti-Jones sentiment prevailing in England. I must, in consideration of their significance, share his communications with you, by relaying Inman's letter to you to read through as well, with the request to be so kind as to send it back along with your response as soon as possible, since Inman is awaiting my reply.
I, for my part, have only little to remark regarding the content, at most perhaps that I have for years actually observed in Jones a number of signs of a less than benevolent acceptance of new interests. Some time ago, he, e.g., wrote that he was pleased to accept Inman, whom you and I recommended, among the members, and now he is putting all kinds of obstacles in his path. Now, I admit that he is a hothead, but certainly one of the most respectable and at the same time most talented colleagues I know. One scares away much too much, I presume, the people who are not completely (even in the finest theoretical offshoots) firm in the saddle, and in so doing one harms the movement. You, Herr Professor, should somehow use your influence to ensure that somewhat more freedom of movement is produced.
In any case, I ask you to have your view about Inman's letter and your advice with regard to the attitude that should be taken get to me as soon as possible. I think I have sufficient influence on Inman to prevent him from taking a possibly harmful step. On the other hand, you, since you know the English situation much better, can find a way to determine the, perhaps justified, accusations, that is to say, to eliminate their causes.
In place of the announced Congress lecture, which is supposed to present a contribution to the theory of genitality, I intend to submit a different one with the title: “Some Contraindications to Active Therap
