Vienna, February 27, 1926
IX., Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Many thanks for your touching suggestion. But you know, my main anxiety is the one about a useless existence; how should I make friends with one that is harmful for my loved ones!
I am, incidentally, not doing badly; no attack since February 19, only mild pains; objectively, the finding is not supposed to be great at all—i.e., if one is finding out the right thing.
There may indeed be a psychic root, but let's not forget, dying also has its psychic root, and it remains quite doubtful whether it can be mastered through analysis, and finally, whether at seventy years of age one doesn't have a good right to rest of any kind.
I am making a beginning of it in this first week of March; I am granting leave to three cases, so I am treating only three hours a day, and I want to indulge myself in everything good otherwise, only no sanatorium, in which one would have to bolster up one's being sick out of boredom and helplessness.
Levy has written to me very rationally, is in complete agreement with Braun; I am staying in communication with him.
If you want to move to Vienna, my analysis need not be the motive. I will hand over to you in patients whatever comes to me.
Cordially,
Freud
