Vienna, May 20, 1926
IX., Berggasse 191
Esteemed colleague!
A substantial sum of money was given to me for my seventieth birthday by the acting head of our International Association as a
“Psychoanalytic Jubilee Fund.”
I have allocated the larger part of it to the International Psychoanalytic Verlag and the smaller to the Vienna outpatient clinic,2 and in so doing I hope to be faithful to the intentions of the donors. I know that, as a Committee member, you have taken special pains to bring this collection into being, and I thank you cordially for doing so.
Sincerely yours,
Freud
The letter is typewritten; only the signature, “Freud,” is handwritten.
On Freud's birthday, “eight or ten of his pupils assembled in Freud's drawing room and presented him with a sum of 30,000 marks ($4,200.00) collected from the members of the Association. He gave four-fifths of it to the Verlag and one-fifth to the Vienna Clinic” (Jones III, 124). This circular letter also went to Burrow, Laforgue, Oberholzer, and Rickman, among others (all in Library of Congress).
