Toledo, October 6, 19281
Dear Professor,
The sly painter Del Greco2 naturally sought out for himself as an atelier, of all places, the wonderfully situated house of Samuel Lévy, the builder of the beautiful synagogue which was then changed into a Catholic church.—In Madrid I met a colleague, Dr. Sacristan (José Maria), the director of an insane asylum. He is (as are the majority of the younger ones, in general) half a cathartic and already half a Jungian. Perhaps I will meet your translator, Ballesteros,3 in Madrid tomorrow. I hope to give you news from Seville (Hotel Madrid).
Ferenczi
Picture postcard (probably from a series): “6. Toledo.—Casa del Greco.”
Ferenczi's spelling [Trans.]. El Greco (“The Greek”), actually Doménikos Theotokópoulos (ca. 1541-1614), the renowned Spanish painter of Greek origin, lived in Toledo from about 1577.
Luis Lopez Ballesteros y de Torres, who had introduced himself to Freud with a translation of Nietzsche (Freud to Oberholzer, November 10, 1921, Library of Congress). He was the translator of the complete works of Freud in Spanish (17 vols., Biblioteca Nueva, 1922ff.).
