Tegel, May 7, 1930
Dear friend,
This in the way of a report: Heart and intestinal ailments made it necessary for me to flee to the Cottage Sanatorium on April 22. The turnabout
began with the painful recognition that a cigar which was smoked on April 25 had to be the last for a rather long time. I was able to go to Berlin on May 4, almost recovered. I am doing quite well here, but it was a piece of autotomy, the way the fox does it when he bites off a leg in the snare. I also don't feel very happy, rather distinctly depersonalized.
Schröder wants to make a new prosthesis for me, that means I won't see Vienna in May, and probably not until late in June. In the meantime, this Tegel is an ideal place to stay if one is treated the way we are.
Your Osiris was just brought over to me, for which I thank you very much. There is half of him, but [he is a piece] of good work; he will soon find company here.
Kind regards,
Freud
