28 February 1909
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Dr. Jones,
Only to give you notice that I will come to your new country in the beginning of Sept. next following an invitation of the Clark University,
Worcester Mass. (Stanley Hall),1 which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its foundation at this term. A former invitation reaching me in Dec. I had to decline, because it contained the condition of being present in the first days of July which would have involved a very considerable loss of medical work in Vienna. I am expected to give a course of 4-6 lectures in—German,2 I am sure—before an audience of Neurologists; the invitation is couched in very honourable terms. I shall be very glad to meet you either in New York or in Worcester and hope my presence and my sayings will not interfere too much with the high diplomacy of your proceedings.
Yours truly,
Freud
G. Stanley Hall (1844-1924) received the first doctorate in psychology (1878) from Harvard under the supervision of William James; in 1887 he founded the American Journal of Psychology. His research interests encompassed sexuality, psychopathology, child development, and adolescence. In 1888 he became the first president of Clark University, Worcester, where Freud received an honorary doctorate in September 1909, constituting the first official acceptance of psychoanalysis in America.
