3 July 1910
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Doctor Jones,
As you know Brill has been with me for some days. We had much talk about you and I was happy to find out that you continue on friendly terms and that he is full of appreciation for the richness and value of your work. He mentioned—I hope he was authorised to do so—your planning to leave Toronto for the New York State service and I quite agree with him, that you have to wait out your professorship on Canadian soil and not degrade yourself by accepting the position of a subordinate. This is even the main motive of my letter as I have little else to tell you. I begin to feel tired and look out impatiently for the 15th of this month, which is to put an end to this years hard working. From the first of August we will be at Noordwijk near Leiden, but you may go on using my Vienna adress until I give you the other.
Your essay of selfanalysis interested me deeply, it showed your character in a very favourable light. As for Gross I dont remember distinctly what his differentiation was, and I am too busy these last days to take to his ingenious but whimsical thoughts. So I beg to be excused this time. I hope you believe me that I feel my time best employed when it goes to correspondence with my friends.
