5 November 1911
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
My dear Professor Jones,
I rejoice in giving you this new title, I did not make so much of it with myself in 1902, at least openly.
I am very glad at the disposition of your wife, let us hope her spirits will keep up until the time is come to do something for her in a serious way. It is a shame that there is no such place as a Sanatorium here at Vienna, where such a patient could be treated by ΨA.
The paper you mention, on morbid anxiety, arrived safely at Karlsbad. I have no special critic to give about it, finding there the usual clearness and neatness of your mind, except hinting at the excellent way you answered some malevolent criticism on the side of… (I forgot the name: Donley or Donkey). Do you really find the rate of our scientific progress an uncommon rapid one? I am standing under the opposite impression sometimes. I find it hard to give a synthesis of our creed, and the single articles thereof are by no means brought together to a good agreement. There are a great many things boiling in my head, but they are very slow to come out, and I always feel it hard to conform completely to another's thoughts. Yet I cannot do everything myself, and the contributions of others, say Jung f.e. [for example] are of the highest importance.
As for your “Nightmare” I have not yet attacked the question of translating, as I am bound to submit to a pause, two pamphlets having appeared just now (Rank and Storfer)1 and Deuticke failing somewhat in his devotion. But the time for it will soon come. D. declined to our great disappointment formally to take the new journal, which now stands foremost among my cares. I hope we will [be] able to produce it with H. Heller (our member here). Rank is already in possession of your salt.
I am working hard on the psychogenesis of religion, finding myself on the same track with Jung's “Wandlungen”.2 Business is not very lively now, but the profit is not big enough, as I feel not so strong as I used to do.
