Dear Professor Freud,
I hope that you had a pleasant journey to Carlsbad, and are now enjoying your well-earned rest and change from Vienna's noise and dust. I travelled straight through to London, except for an hour's stay at Bonn where I had time to accompany my wife to her sister's house. She stood the journey (21 hours in hot weather) excellently well, although we could get no Schlafcoupé [sleeping car]. It is also the first time I have seen her pack and get ready so calmly and sensibly, without any Reisefieber.1 I suggested it was the beginning of the ψα success, but she preferred to attribute it to the journey being in the direction of London. However when her sister asked her about the treatment, and about you personally, she was very enthusiastic and her attitude was one of great confidence. It is the first sign of identification when someone will not allow a stranger to attack a cause, but reserves that pleasure for themself, just like when a man “runs down” his own country but resents a stranger doing it. She comes on to London (without the dog) next Monday, but will only stay a week or so. Then she returns to Holland for a month to visit various relatives and comes back to London early in September.
