Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
My dear Jones,
I have many motives to write you the first letter this Sunday: your wife, your present, your letter, the news about ψα, wish I could write you in German but German words in latin characters are impossible to me and I am sure you would not decipher my gothic ones.
Now for the first topic. Your wife is splendid, no trace of “kidney” pains since the first attack and no doubt, this first one was fabricated out of the monthly, which betrayed itself by definite somatic signs (no blood) at the right term and unaccompanied by pains these last days. Morphia is down to 2 + 2 (one third). I am even more contented that is she [she is] not so much “maniacal” while in good temper and even stoops to pieces of patient uninteresting analytical work. So the chance is good and the change sure to be a lasting one, though to be sure there is some doubt how far the chief point, the sexual anesthesia can be gained.
As for the book you sent me from Rome about Rome, it arrived at St. Nicholas day together with the gorgeous flower-arrangement from your wife. She is showering flowers on me and I promised to return them to her as soon as her pains were setting in. But we could not wait for them and she got some flowers from my side yesterday. I am very glad you are getting so deep an impression at Rome and quite sure you did feel pretty unhappy in the first days as every honest man is bound to do. Your enjoyments will come out clearer every day. I know the restaurant on the Aventine
