4 December 1913
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
My dear Jones,
I cannot abstain from sending back Jungs letter, it may be interesting for you after some time. He has learned Ψ A in order to bring forward the demand that personal complexes ought to be overlooked. A very nice result. “It is all a mistake” reminds me of something similar recurring saying in Kipling's Phantom Rickshaw.1
Your letter contains an excellent piece of news that your practice begins to pay. I am glad to hear you have lost Toronto, you could not succeed in London with that burden.
Something you are wishing for will reach you in the next days although I would prefer to have wished for something else.
I have seen Loe. To be sure she was more kind in my presence than she shows in my absence. I found her not inaccessible to reason and repentence and gave her 2 hours a week to help her in clearing the darkness of the last London events and freeing herself again from Morphia. I know the former sweetness will be banished from our relations, I am not sure that the “new course” will help her.
I am eager to know what your intentions are about meeting at Xmas at Vienna or Berlin. Mine are unchanged.
As regards your doubts on Deuticke's behaviour it may be safely said that he is formally correct and that his only love is for his pocket. Heller was aspiring to the Jahrbuch eagerly but we thought it was favourable to lean upon two sticks and to regulate the one by the other. Besides it was a point to keep a position and have the adversary look out for a fresh one.
With sincere love
yours
