24 January 1919
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I have to answer your letter of the 9th without delay. I have received your book, the second edition of your papers,1 by the kindness of Nunberg2 who got it from Sachs on his sojourn at Zürich. I do not know whether it
was meant for me or if Sachs sent me his own. In any case I was very glad to have it, found it imposing and learned from the remark in the preface, that British scientists are sometimes very much alike to German ones. I could not yet peruse it at leisure. Sachs proposed that he would translate the paper on symbolism while my daughter ought to do the last one about “anal traits”.3 She is busy on it and took it from me.
Regarding your question ‘how you should’ arrange matters in the re-born ψα Society I venture to say, your plan seems pretty reasonable, as you work on fresh soil and must throw out the majority of former members. The associates will have the chance or undergo the obligation to be turned into members after due time?
As for the journal, I hope you know, that both periodicals, Zeitschrift and Imago, have become official with the “european” groups. I hope also you have heard by Sachs, that we are setting on foot a ψα Verlag. Now Rank developed the idea at the same time as you, that you should bring out an english edition of the Zeitschrift (or both), all the papers getting translated into the two languages. That means the extension of the Verlag and the forming of an english affiliation. He (R.) will write you soon about this plan and what is more, offer you a meeting in Switzerland to discuss and to decide on this plan, as soon as both of you can do, maybe in February. I will be sorry not to attend to it, but it is impossible for me. Rank is faultless in all these matters.
Vol. IV of the kl. Schriften4 will be posted tomorrow to van Emden and he will be informed by a card, that it is your property.
I am very glad to find motives to write to you so often after so long a break of intercourse.
