Dear Professor,
Your most welcome letter of the 15th came today; the distance between us is shortening. By this post I send Rank my plan for our Journal, which I beg you to consider. More urgent is the question of constituting a new
society (purged of Eder, etc.), on which I am anxious for your views. The Aufschwung [upward swing] in England is extraordinary; ψα stands in the forefront of medical, literary, and psychological interest. The “Shell-shock” hospitals have ψα societies, lectures are given at medical schools, etc., etc.. I have 10 patients daily, and this month 16 more have applied for my next vacant hour. Do not expect to see much output from me during the war. With the exception of the Ferenczi translation, two articles on psychology of war, and several lectures, all is in the book Sachs has forwarded to you.1 You will like the preface. I should like to have your opinion on what I consider the chief additions, symbolism, war shock, and anal character.2
We read that the English are sending much food to Vienna, but I suppose only a tithe of what is needed. Pfister tells me he can look after you and your family in Switzerland if necessary. Remember how valuable your health is, and make any sacrifices to maintain it. Soon there will be plenty of food and money. I am trying to get a permit to visit Wien before peace is declared, on the ground of investigating work done there on “war shock”. I look forward to work and life when I think of you and our friends.
Yours affectionately Ernest Jones.
