19 June 1919
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I got both your letters of the 3d and 10th June today and hasten to reply. Glad to hear your health has improved and your mind is full of confidence. But let me say, if we try to free judgment from the influence of personal
infantile disposition, we must agree that our case here is a very bad one. Mark I never doubted the ultimate chances of our science, although even this may be further off from triumph than my younger friends seem to expect.
As regards our meeting in summertime I made you know by Dr. Forsyth that I intend going to Gastein (near Salzburg) alone about the 20th of July and will be glad to see you there in one of the most glorious of alpine surroundings. The “Räteregierung” [communist government] behaved rather kindly against our science so far. Ferenczi has become the first official university teacher on ΨA, (oö. Professor),1 a success not dreamt before!2 Be assured we will do everything in our power to strengthen your hand in the anglo-american paper business, but at the moment we can neither get nor send a communication to Bpest. A meeting in a neutral country seems excluded, travelling is too hard for most of the concerned and we can get no foreign money in Austria. My wife,—thanks to your inquiry,—is recovering. She means to go to a sanatorium near Salzburg. My son is not yet at home. We are losing much of our spare life-time in waiting. Now it seems the very next weeks ought to bring us the decision for bad or for worse, but we [are]3 were saying so for many months past and are still kept waiting. So wait we must.
Rank is of great help to me in these times. I am afraid we can do nothing for Sachs who clings to Switzerland and evades coming home.
Nr. 1 and 2 of the Int. ψα Bibliothek have appeared. Did you get them?
