28 July 1919
Badgastein, Villa Wassing
Dear Jones,
I am here since the 15th and I have nearly completely recovered from the scratches and bruises of this year's life. I intend to stay here until the
12th of Aug. and will give you notice of every change or turn of my plans. The Hollandese invited me for lectures at Leiden, Utrecht and Amsterdam, but as their time is the second week of Oktober, when I will be due at home, it is likely to come to nothing.
I will be very glad to hear of you and extremely disappointed if you cannot make your appearance in Vienna in the course of this autumn. As for business apply to Rank, who is bound to wait for his babe there. He is doing all the work, performing the possible and the impossible alike, I dare say, you know him for what he is, the truest, most reliable, most charming of helpers, the column, which is bearing the edifice. I have given him full power to decide as I recognise his superiority in managing these intricate practical matters.
I read no papers and am forgetting our miseries in a rapid way. The third volume of our “Bibliothek” has just reached me, the Alltagsleben in sixth edition.1 I wrote Rank to send you a sample of it. I am busy on a paper “Jenseits des Lustprinzips”2 but not too busy, as I cannot work, when I am bodily all right, I am ashamed to confess.
Sachs is bent upon staying in Switzerland and I am sure he is right as his health would not hold against a winter [sta]3 at Vienna. I take care however not to influence him, because just now I am unable to help him, sending away all I can spare to my children at Hamburg, bereft of their subsistence by the war. Of my boys only Oli, the engineer, has found some work for a time, Ernest is working at Munich for no salary and Martin whom we expect back in a few weeks, would find himself on the street despite his many medals and decorations, if he had not an old father still at work.
Answer me soon, I am so glad, war did change nothing between us.
Yours with best love.
