2 May 1920
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I really cant see what you are thanking [me] for. The fact is that I could do very little for you and your dear wife while here and that I am living to a great extent from such patients as you sent me. The balance is evidently in your favour.
As for Forsyth I regret his attitude sincerely but I have made up my mind not to address him any more unless he applies to me, which is not likely to happen. Leave him alone!
I have succeeded with Rank to make him accept your generous offer, at least provisionally and for this year 1920. Definite arrangements can be postponed until we may be able to judge the life chances of the Press and the Journal. You had only one father and [it] is not probable that you will get another inheritance of ψα1000 next year. I trust I would have been able to act the same way as you when I had grown wealthy but unfortunately fate has never put me to the trial.
I agree with your intention to bring out the papers on technique as a separate volume in English, but you ought to superintend the translation yourself. The metapsych. papers are too hard a reading for your public I should think.1
Rank and I had a discussion with one member of the late Hungarian government on the valours you remember. It is not yet decided, but I am pretty sure that we will get a good deal.2
With best love to your wife and yourself
Freud
